    ----- ------

ABOUT MEDIATION, AND ABOUT COMMUNICATIONS, AND
ABOUT TELLING HUMAN STORIES IN AN INHUMAN WAY.

OF PRINTED TEXT AND VOCALIZATIONS. THE MEDIUM IS
1" WIDE PAPER TAPE, ABOUT 650 FEET LONG.

    TURING
    ------
FOR THE "OUT WEST" SHOW I'VE WRITTEN A BRIEF
    BIOGRAPHY OF ALAN TURING,
    AN OUT-OF-THE-CLOSET ATHEIST HOMOSEXUAL
    BRITISH MATHEMATICIAN EARLIER THIS CENTURY
    (1912--1954). IN 1936 HE WROTE A MATHEMATICAL
PAPER THAT DEFINED A HYPOTHETICAL "UNIVERSAL
MACHINE" THAT ESSENTIALLY MECHANISED WHAT WAS
THOUGHT TO BE THE EXCLUSIVE REALM OF THE HUMAN
MIND; DURING WORLD-WAR-TWO HE DEVISED METHODS
AND MACHINES TO DO CODE BREAKING, WHICH WAS
DECISIVE IN WINNING THE WAR; POST-WAR HE DESIGNED
COMPUTERS, AND WROTE THE FIRST PROGRAMMING
MANUAL; HE DEVOTED MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF HIS
LIFE TO MACHINE INTELLIGENCE AND BIOLOGY, AMIDST
A WITHERING COLD-WAR ENVIRONMENT THAT HAUNTED HIM
UNTIL HIS SUICIDE IN 1954 AT AGE 42.

ALAN HELD HIGH STANDARDS FOR HIMSELF AND THE
WORLD, AND VALUED HONESTY ABOVE ALL ELSE. HE
    WAS UNAPOLOGETICALLY HOMOSEXUAL THROUGHOUT
HIS LIFE, NO SMALL FEAT DURING WORLD WAR TWO
AND THE LONG, COLD, WAR THAT FOLLOWED IT.

THERE IS NO SMALL AMOUNT OF IRONY AND SYNERGY
    BETWEEN TURING'S "UNIVERSAL MACHINE" AND
THE PAPER TAPE MEDIUM OF HIS TIME, AS USED
    IN THE STORY-TELLER SYSTEM.

    HODGES
    ------
(AN ABSOLUTELY ENORMOUS DEBT IS OWED TO ANDREW
HODGES, ALAN TURING'S BIOGRAPHER, IT IS SAFE
TO SAY WITHOUT WHOM TURING WOULD HAVE REMAINED
AN ENIGMA... I PERSONALLY OWE HIM THANKS BECAUSE
WITHOUT HIS BOOK MY LIFE WOULD BE POORER, NEVER
MIND THAT MY ENTIRE 'STORY TELLER' SYSTEM AND
THIS STORY WAS INSPIRED BY WHAT I READ OF
    TURING'S LIFE.)

ALAN TURING: THE ARCHITECT OF THE COMPUTER AGE,
    by Ted Gottfried, 1996
    ISBN 0-531-11287-X
    A brief biography intended for young students;
what it lack in depth is made up for in its
frank and enlightened treatment of Alan's sexuality.
It does a decent job of explaining Alan's
work. An excellent stealth book to sneak into
libraries. Gottfried appears to be a prolific
    writer of biographies.
